What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder affects about 5 million people in the United States alone. The symptoms include a combination of obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions are concerns and thoughts that recur out of the normal. Often their content disturbs the person with OCD.

Examples of such obsessive symptoms are:

  • A recurring fear of harming others
  • An excessive concern with dirt and contamination
  • An inability to throw out things that they really wish to get rid of
  • An inordinate fear of saying the wrong things
Compulsions are behaviors that the OCD sufferer feels compelled to carry out, even if the behavior is not desired and does not make sense.

Examples of such compulsive symptoms may include:
  • Excessive cleaning and washing
  • Constantly checking already closed doors and already locked locks
  • An excessive need to touch or rub
